Malta & hidden gems, they sure go hand in hand. When Visit Malta invited us to the island we never thought we would experience such divergent activities. One of them was a visit to Maria Rosa Wine Estate. This small boutique winery is situated under the silent city of Mdina, the old capital of Malta.
The winery is named after the spouse of Mr Joseph Fenech, the owner, who dreamed to produce his own wine as his father did in his youth. On the land of Maria Rosa you’ll find three varieties of grapes: Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Sirakuzan. Maria Rosa Wine Estate is focused to produce high end Maltese quality wines with great emphasis on the quality rather than quantity. Therefore, the wine production is kept limited to 18-20 thousand bottles on an annual basis.
Maria Rosa wines require only a minimum of technological intervention. The raw material is the result of a very sustainable form of agriculture which is conducted in full respect of the natural environment. The winery works with nature and aims to bring out the best out of an excellent starting raw material.
- Cabernet Sauvignon: this wine expresses an intriguing minty nose with nuances of eucalyptus and wood whilst its palate gives flavours of dark red fruit supported by a rich texture.
- Syrah: the aroma gives an impression of a berry jam sweetness with notes of maraschino cherries. Its medium-bodied palate accentuates its red fruit characteristics very generously, confirming the impression given by its nose.
- Sirakuzan: this nero d’avola (the most important grape of Sicily) is marked by an attractive open red fruitiness with touches of sweet ripe figs. Its palate makes for an easy drinking wine with marked hints of new leather and plum. Our favourite!
During our tour through the vineyards we also spotted olive trees. Freshly picked olives were waiting to be pressed into pure extra virgine olive oil the next morning. We were lucky to taste the different kinds of Sarosa wines, together with freshly baked bread, olive oil and excellent Maltese cheese. All these pure tastes and the lovely chat with the sommelier, the kindest Sicilian lady, made this experience memorable, a must visit for foodies & wine lovers alike.
